Sting players going to NHL Prospect Tournament – Sarnia Observer

Former Sarnia Sting goalies Justin Fazio and Kaden Fulcher are on the Detroit Red Wings’ roster for the annual NHL Prospect Tournament to be held Sept. 7-11 in Traverse City, Mich.

Former Sarnia Sting goalies Justin Fazio and Kaden Fulcher are on the Detroit Red Wings’ roster for the annual NHL Prospect Tournament to be held Sept. 7-11 in Traverse City, Mich.

Three current and former Sting defencemen – Connor Schlichting, Theo Calvas and Mitch Eliot – will play for the Carolina Hurricanes at the eight-team tournament.

The field also includes the Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers. Not all teams have announced their rosters.

Fazio, 21, led the Ontario Hockey League with a .918 save percentage during his overage season with the Sting in 2017-18. He was 37-11-3-0 with two shutouts and a 2.85 goals-against average.

The Sarnia native owns the Sting career records for games played (176) and wins (92) by a goaltender. He shares the team record for career shutouts (six).

Fazio is going to the tournament as an undrafted free agent. If he doesn’t sign a pro contract, he has a deal to play at Queen’s University next season, according to Victor Findlay of the Canadian University Sports Network.

Fulcher, 19, played for the Red Wings at the 2017 NHL Prospect Tournament as a free agent. He signed a three-year, entry-level contract with them last October.

The Brigden native backstopped the Hamilton Bulldogs to the OHL championship last season. He was named the most outstanding goaltender at the Memorial Cup, where the Bulldogs
