Stetson University student arrested after police find rifle, ammunition … – Orlando Sentinel

A Stetson University student was arrested and suspended after he was found with a gun on campus Wednesday morning, according to the university.

Around 3 a.m., a university security guard noticed a car with a blown tire pull into a handicap parking spot in front of a dormitory. The guard approached the driver, and Preston Barrow, 20, told the man that he had just smoked marijuana and had a rifle in his car, police said.

Police responded and found an unloaded rifle, scope and 27 rounds of ammunition scattered throughout the car. They also found several pipes, a vaporizer and less than a gram of marijuana, according to court documents.

Barrow claimed to have a medical marijuana prescription, police said.

He told police he had the rifle with him because he planned to go shooting after he took a test in the morning. He told police he wasn’t planning to harm anyone, authorities said.

In a statement, a university spokesperson said Barrow was suspended and banned from returning to campus. He faces a conduct hearing which may take months to resolve.

“Students are informed of the weapons policy before they come to campus,” said Janie Graziani, a spokeswoman for the school. “As far as Stetson is concerned, there is no confusion about the meaning of the policy or its enforcement.”

Barrow was arrested on charges of marijuana possession, drug paraphernalia possession and possession of a firearm on school property, a felony. He was taken to the Volusia County Jail on a $3,500 bond.
