Review: Smooch a Pooch had beer, pizza and puppies – Red and Black

Beer, babies, puppies and pizza — these well-known joy bringers were all present at the second Smooch a Pooch event held at The Southern Brewing Company on Friday, Feb. 9.

For the second year in a row, Southern Brewing Company teamed up with with the Athens Area Humane Society to help create a fun and enjoyable event that also had several puppies available for adoption.

Leah Trotter, the outreach and communication specialist for the Athens Area Humane Society, said they were excited to be asked back to host Smooch a Pooch again.

“Last year, it went so well, and this year Southern Brewing Company was like ‘Do y’all want to come back?’ and we said yeah,” she said. “We were very lucky to be asked back.”

Feb. 9 also just so happened to be national pizza day, so in celebration of this, Your Pie was also present at the event serving delicious hot pizza.

The event ran from 4:30-9 p.m., but the crowds really began to pick up around dinner time. By 6 p.m., the line for beer and pizza were both at least 10 people deep, and there were dogs of all breeds as far as the eye could see.

Sarah McNabb, a University of Georgia senior and psychology major from Flowery Branch, found out about the event through Southern Brewing Company’s Facebook page.

“One of the reasons we like to come [to Southern Brewing Company] is because there’s always dogs,” McNabb said.

There were six puppies available for adoption at the event, all from different litters,
