PGI to hold march for tobacco-free society – Times of India

CHANDIGARH: Continuing in its efforts to turn the society tobacco-free, the PGI would be organizing a foot march on World No Tobacco Day on Saturday. The march will be flagged off at 11am from Nehru Hospital and after covering all the advanced centres of the Institute, will concluded in the new OPD block by the director of PGIMER Prof Y K Chawla.

World No Tobacco Day is an official campaign marked by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is observed around the world on May 31. It aims to encourage abstinence from all forms of tobacco, and draw attention towards the negative effects of tobacco consumption on health.The foot march, being organized by PGI’s department of hospital administration in co-operation with Carmel Ex Students’ Association (CESA), involves participation from students of Carmel Convent School and St John’s High School. It will also involve members of CESA and faculty of the department, and employees from the security and sanitation departments of the institute. As a part of the awareness programme, PGI’s School of Public Health will also discuss its “Journey towards smoke-free Punjab” and “Smoke-free Compliance Assessment Guidelines”.

The health department, UT, will also paste awareness posters in local CTU buses and distribute hand-outs in different schools on Saturday. “We want to make the youths aware of the ill effects of consuming tobacco. We will do our best to spread the message,” said Dr Deepak Bakshi, nodal officer, tobacco control, UT.

According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey Report 2009-2010 (GATS), one-third adults use tobacco in some or the other form in India. Nearly 15% of children in the age group of 13-15 consume tobacco in smoke-form or other (Global Youth Tobacco Survey-2009), while 27.4% boys and 8.3% girls in the age group of 15-24 consume tobacco.
