A week after the Pittsburgh Penguins finished off the 2016-17 NHL season by winning their second consecutive Stanley Cup, it’s full speed ahead for the 2017-18 season.

The Vegas Knights will be joining the league as its 31st team, and their selections in the expansion draft will be announced Wednesday at the league’s annual Award Show.

The NHL rookie draft is coming after that, and so is the NHL’s free-agent season.

In addition to those events, teams will also be able to upgrade their team through the trade route. However, all trades that don’t involve the Knights are on hold until the expansion team’s moves are announced Wednesday.

The Montreal Canadiens acquired Jonathan Drouin in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday and also traded Nathan Beaulieu to the Buffalo Sabres, and general manager Marc Bergevin could remain busy.

The Canadiens are in contract talks with center Alex Galchenyuk, but the greater likelihood is that he will be traded.

NHL insider Darren Dreger tweeted that the Habs’ many needs make Galchenyuk a trade target.

Galchenyuk scored 17 goals and 27 assists last season, and six of his goals were game winners. However, the 23-year-old had a minus-five rating, and he does not have the defensive game that is likely to satisfy head coach Claude Julien.
