PLAINS TWP. — Big changes are coming to Mohegan Sun Pocono.

For the first time in years, the Plains Twp. casino will not hold a fireworks display for the July 4 holiday, according to Tony Carlucci, president and CEO of Mohegan Sun Pocono.

Instead, Carlucci said the casino will contribute to the City of Wilkes-Barre’s fireworks event on July 4 at Kirby Park.

“While we have enjoyed providing firework displays in years past, we always want to stay involved in the community outside of Mohegan Sun Pocono too, and this was one of those initiatives,” Carlucci said.

Carlucci would not say how much it costs to hold a fireworks display at the casino or how much Mohegan Sun Pocono will contribute to the city’s fireworks display, but he said, “We are proud to be the largest financial contributor as the title sponsor for this event at Kirby Park.”

Mohegan Sun Pocono also will not hold Oktoberfest this year. The casino has held the event in partnership with Times-Shamrock Communications, which owns The Citizens’ Voice.

“We’re always evaluating our events across Mohegan Sun Pocono, those of the annual variety included,” Carlucci said in an emailed statement. “In doing so for PA Oktoberfest, which was a partnership with Times-Shamrock, keeping both what is best for our guests in mind as well as what is best for Mohegan Sun Pocono from a business standpoint, we decided it was in the best interest to take this year off and continue to evaluate this fall event.”
