Massena craft beer & grocery store 'Alkie's Brews' to hold grand opening Sept. 19 – North Country Now

By ANDY GARDNER

MASSENA — A new craft beer and grocery store will hold a grand opening at the end of this month.

Alkie’s Brews, on North Main Street, will mark the occasion on Sept. 29.

The store focuses on craft beer, but they also have “the regular beer that everyone likes,” said store owner Vicki Burnett, adding that they are not a brewery.

“It’s a specialty grocery and beer store,” she said.

Their inventory includes 15 drafts beers and a non-alcoholic nitro-infused cold brew coffee that can be bought in 32- or 64-ounce growlers.

“We’re selling a lot of growlers. It’s going really, really well,” Burnett said.

She said customers are showing a wide taste in the craft beers, which include India pale ales (IPA), stouts, sours and many other varieties.

“It’s all over the place. It all sells. It’s not like one sells more than others,” she said.

Their most expensive bottled beer is a brand from Scotland called Old Engine Oil, a black ale with 6 percent alcohol that sells for $28.99 per six pack.

The bottled beer is priced per bottle, so people can mix and match six packs, or just buy single bottles.

They also take suggestions from customers who can’t find their preferred beers.

In addition to the beer, they have local foods that go well with them.

“We also have fresh local cheese, local honey, local syrup. We try to focus on a lot of local products,” she said. They also have fresh baked goods, pickled products, hot tea, hot coffee and hot chocolate, and “mixers to go with stuff from the liquor store” across the street.

The store has three employees besides Burnett, including her son.

They are open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
