Jays place Estrada on DL with glute strain – MLB.com

The Blue Jays announced Friday that right-handed starter Marco Estrada has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left glute strain. Outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to fill Estrada’s place on the 25-man roster.

Estrada (4-7) was scheduled to pitch Saturday against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. The Blue Jays haven’t named a starter in his place, but one possibility could be Sam Gaviglio, who threw just 48 pitches in his start on Wednesday against the Braves.

Estrada has a 4.72 ERA in 17 starts this season. He went at least five innings and didn’t allow more than three runs in all five of his June starts, but he exited his July 3 outing against the Mets early with left hip soreness. Estrada’s move to the DL is retroactive to Tuesday.

This will be Smith’s second stint with the Blue Jays this season. He played 15 games in May, batting .300 with a home run and four RBIs.
