The Forest Hill High School band could face a year-long performance ban, folloing its halftime show in Brookhaven depicting guns being held on police.

Todd Kelly with the Mississippi High School Activities Association confirmed that the organization sent a notice to the Jackson Public Schools District outlining possible sanctions.

Kelly would not go into further detail. Band supporters, including Ward 6 Councilman Aaron Banks said the notice outlined a yearlong suspension for the band.

Kelly said the district will be afforded an appeals process.

District officials did not respond to multiple requests for comment on Friday.

“Let’s be clear, the band students of Forest Hill should not be punished due to a bad decision made by a teacher,” he wrote.

Community members held a news conference Friday morning to challenge the suspension.
