The stakes are high inside Bristol Community College’s new gaming lab.

A first-of-its-kind lab in Massachusetts is preparing students to work in casino management.

“It’s a great opportunity for young people today who are looking for a good-paying job and for a job that there’s going to be tons of openings for,” said John Caressimo, who is the director of the Catch Institute.

BCC officials celebrated a ribbon cutting Friday morning at the casino lab, which is located inside the Silver City Galleria Mall in Taunton.

The college received approval from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission in June to train students to work in a casino. The casino lab will run table games, including blackjack and poker.

“What it means for the community is that the community has a facility right in its own backyard where they’ll be able to get that particular training that they need for jobs,” Caressimo said.

Caressimo said it’s a good time to learn what it takes to work in the state’s growing gaming industry.

“Once all three casinos open up in the Commonwealth, there’s going to be something like 10,000 or 11,000 jobs that are going to be needed,” Caressimo said.

Students will earn an associate’s degree once they finish. They are also required to take academic classes, including math and history.
