Among the high-rollers gathered round tables for the world’s greatest poker tournament crochet-loving Birmingham gran Shirley Marshall cut an incongruous figure.

The 62-year-old, married to angling-addicted pensioner Ken, likes a game of cards. Her biggest poker win, she smiles, is an impressive … £23.50.

And no, that’s not a misprint. It’s twenty-three pounds and fifty pence.

But there Shirley was, at the table for the World Series of Poker tournament, staged in Vegas this week, with a $8.1 MILLION first prize up or grabs.

She found herself at at the Rio Hotel and Casino, pitted against the best “Hold ‘Em” poker players in the world.

It was quite a leap for the former Birmingham City Council finance officer.

Not least because Vegas was only her second “live” performance. Those around her in the Nevada casino had regularly won and lost fortunes,

Incredibly, gamblers paid $10,000 each to take part in the World Series.

Shirley, from Northfield, paid £2 – less than the price of a supermarket loaf.

Winning those games gave her the chance to spin the prize wheel. It stopped on a $12,500 poker package to Vegas – a package that include her place in the World Series of Poker main event, a five-night stay at the luxurious Vdara Hotel plus travel money and expenses.

At first, son Jonathan, 34 – a keen poker player – tried to take mum’s place. He was upset to learn that the seat was not transferable.

Jonathan, a pipe-fitter by trade, need not have worried.
