BELOIT (WKOW) — The Beloit casino project that has been on the drawing board for years took a major step forward Friday after the Ho-Chunk Nation announced the Bureau of Indian Affairs had completed its draft environmental impact statement.

The federal action moves the Beloit casino forward in the final approval process, according to a news release from the Ho-Chunk Nation.

The next step is a public hearing in Beloit, although a date has not been scheduled.

City of Beloit officials welcomed the news.

“The City of Beloit is thrilled that the casino project is advancing forward at the federal level,” City Manager Lori Curtis Luther said in a statement. “We’re hopeful that it can now move more quickly through the final approval process to provide 1,500 jobs and to bring countless visitors to the Greater Beloit area.”

“This casino, hotel, convention center, and waterpark will surely be an asset to our great community. The Ho-Chunk Nation has an excellent reputation for running high-quality properties, and we look forward to continuing our relationship with the tribe throughout the duration of this project,” she said.
