Weed Appreciation Day: Not What You Might Think – The Weather Channel

We’re celebrating the weed. No, not that weed. March 28th is National weed appreciation day. And on this day we honor the unruly plant most of us want to forget.

There are several reasons we shouldn’t be so quick to pull the life out of those bottom soil feeders. Some weeds carry priceless medicinal value. For example, The Lamb’s Quarters offers digestive support and is rich in vitamin A and calcium. If that wasn’t enough, crushed leaves from the plantain relieve bees stings.

Other weeds provide a source of food and nutrition for animals, birds, and people too. Online recipes boast and entire meal made of Dandelion. Sauté them in oil with onion and garlic, mix up a dandelion salad, and finish with some dandelion wine. Then dig in!

I doubt anyone will be baking a cake and blowing out the candles when those pesky plants start sprouting in your yard, but maybe you’ll whisper a little thank you the next time you have to pull them up.
