Upstate NY casino news: tourists lured by del Lago; fine-tuning Rivers, lit up in Buffalo – NewYorkUpstate.com

The new del Lago Resort & Casino near Waterloo seems to be boosting tourism in Seneca County.

Almost a quarter of the visitors staying at Seneca County hotels in the first three months of 2017 reported they came for the new casino, which didn’t open until Feb. 1, according to a report in the Finger Lakes Times.

The Times cited a tourism study presented by the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce, which conducted a survey of hotel guests for January, February and March. The survey found that 23 percent of the visitors came for the casino. That was a big part of the 42 percent who reported coming to Seneca County for tourism-related activities such as visiting wineries and breweries, shopping and recreation, including the casino.

The tourism survey showed 70 percent of the visitors came from New York state, 4 percent came from Canada, 3 percent from New Jersey, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania and 2 percent from China.

The $440 million del Lago resort, just off state Thruway Exit 41 in Waterloo, is currently building a 205-room hotel and spa, expected to be completed this summer. The hotel is now taking reservations, with a first booking date of July 14.

Del Lago is a partnership between Rochester developer Wilmorite and JNB Gaming of Iowa. It is one of four full-service, non-Indian casinos approved to operate in the state in 2015. Two others — Tioga Downs in Nichols and Rivers Casino and Resort in Schenectady, are also open. The fourth, which was to be called Montreign, will open in 2018 as a Resort World property near Monticello in the Catskills.
