MUNCIE, Ind. — Ball State University’s 13 fraternities have sworn off alcohol at their parties for the next three months, a university official said Tuesday.

The decision to go dry at both gatherings at frat houses and co-hosted events until Feb. 1 was made late Monday after the university’s Greek Life staff met with the fraternity presidents at an Interfraternity Council meeting, said Kathy Wolf, the university’s vice president for marketing and communications.

“The fraternities are taking a stand and showing leadership, signing a joint letter with the university,” she said. “It’s not one single incident that has caused this.”

Since 1984, the minimum legal drinking age across the USA has been 21.

What Ball State officials were seeing was a trend that was not consistent with the university’s Beneficence Pledge, Wolf said. One of its four sections states that school faculty, staff and students pledge to act in a socially responsible way:

To treat each person in the Ball State community with civility, courtesy, compassion and dignity; to respect the property and environment of the campus.

“As a result, what we’re doing is pausing, if you will, and saying, ‘Hey, together let’s work on this,’ ” Wolf said.
