Top Giants' pitching prospect to make MLB debut this week – The Mercury News

SAN FRANCISCO–The wait will soon be over for the Giants’ top pitching prospect.

Tyler Beede, the franchise’s 2014 first round draft choice, will make his Major League debut Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Giants waited until after Monday’s 2-1 loss to announce when Beede would start.

“We did bring him up here to give us some options,” manager Bruce Bochy said before Monday’s game. “He’ll pitch in the next couple of days and we’ll see how it goes here tonight.”

The Giants announced Beede, 24, was added to the taxi squad Monday, which allowed him to participate in pregame drills and be with the team despite not being activated yet.

The club announced a corresponding roster move, optioning reliever Roberto Gomez to Triple-A Sacramento after Gomez threw two scoreless innings against Arizona in a 2-1 loss.

Bochy said this weekend that the Giants would use a fifth starter, either Beede or fellow prospect Andrew Suarez, in Wednesday’s game against the Diamondbacks. However, members of the Giants’ front office weighed several factors that ultimately pushed Beede’s debut up to Tuesday.

“It’s nice to be up here and part of this group in any way that you can contribute,” Beede said. “It’s the best-case scenario so I’m just happy to be here and soak up the time that I do have here.”

Right-hander Johnny Cueto is now the team’s scheduled starter for Wednesday’s series-finale.

Bochy said he wanted to watch Monday’s game unfold before announcing a decision regarding Beede’s status, which indicated the Giants wanted to monitor how their bullpen was taxed. After the Giants played two extra inning games over the weekend, left-hander Derek Holland tossed six innings of two-run ball in the loss to the Diamondbacks.
