'The Hangover' scene stealer Ken Jeong makes casino debut at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa – Press-Enterprise

Before Ken Jeong’s acting career exploded — seriously, he became a star when he burst out of a trunk, naked, in “The Hangover” — he donned a white coat, stethoscope and kept patients laughing as a general practitioner in Los Angeles.

Stand-up had been the side gig for Jeong, who eventually switched careers to become an actor, racking up credits in films such as “Knocked Up,” “Couples Retreat” and the three “The Hangover” flicks, sitcom “Community.” He also created and starred in his own series, “Dr. Ken.”

Even with more time on-screen, his first love of stand-up comedy never dimmed and the actor recently began performing on comedy club stages again. He will make his debut casino performance at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa on Thursday, April 12.

We caught up with Jeong in a recent phone interview ahead of his Rancho Mirage performance.

Q: Did you grow up in a funny household?

A: My dad has a great sense of humor. He’s a retired economics professor and I remember taping one of his classes and he worked the room like a comic doing crowd work. I definitely got the comedy gene from my dad and I do believe it is hereditary.

Q: What were you like in high school?

A:  I was in the orchestra and an academic guy and just wanted to get into a good school and classified myself as a popular nerd — I was a nerdy guy but got along with everybody, never got bullied and was an easy going guy always looking for a good laugh.
