Special Report: Tracing guns used in crimes – WRGT TV Fox 45

DAYTON, Ohio (WRGT) – It’s not a quick or easy process for authorities to trace a gun back to its owner if a gun is used to commit a crime.

Whenever a crime is committed, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have to sift through tens of thousands of boxes, containing paper documents. There is no national database that tracks gun ownership, so the ATF has to do it all by hand.

In a special report you’ll only see on FOX 45, Adam Aaro takes us to the site that contains records ATF agents sift through to solve crimes. In the report on Monday, October 30, on FOX 45 News at 10, we’ll show you the other hurdles agents face in tracking down guns used in crimes and how they still manage to get the job done.
