Columbia police suspect drug or alcohol intoxication contributed to a serious-injury motorcycle crash Saturday night at Paris and Brown Station roads.

The crash happened with a motorcycle driven by Aaron Monroe, 38, of Columbia was going north on Paris Road, ran a red light and crashed into a a vehicle at Brown Station Road, the Columbia Police Department said in a news release. Monroe and his passenger, Michele Groves, 39, of Columbia, were thrown from the motorcycle and Groves was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, police said. Monroe was treated for moderate injuries.

Investigators believe Monroe was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the crash happened, according to a summary of the crash. The summary did not specify what substance police believe Monroe had taken. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
