Outerlimits Powerboats president dies after boat crash in Florida poker run – Lakenewsonline.com

FLKeysnews.com reported that the Outerlimits powerboat was heading south on the bayside of Marathon, Fla. when it flipped over just before noon Thursday. The vessel was approximately one-quarter mile offshore.

The president of Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats passed away from injuries that resulted from a boating accident during a Florida poker run Nov. 9.

According to reporting by FLKeysnews.com, the victim – Joseph Sgro, 63, of Long Island, N.Y. – was operating the throttles of a new 50-foot SB 50 with four other men on board while they participated in the Florida Powerboat Club’s annual poker run which features boats cruising 180 miles from Miami to Key West through the backwaters of the Keys. It is the kickoff event for the annual Key West Super Boat International World Championship.

On the evening of Nov. 9, the Outerlimits Powerboats Facebook page stated, “Today we lost our great leader Joe Sgro. Nothing made Joe more happy than driving an Outerlimits. It was his passion that kept Outerlimits alive. Joe and Mike [Fiore] are now racing again. Godspeed my friend! You will be deeply missed. RIP”.

Seriously injured in the accident, Sgro was airlifted to a mainland hospital for treatment and was reported as having died from the injuries that afternoon.

FLKeysnews.com also reported that two passengers – Joseph Nestola, 56, and Joseph Latona, 60 – were injured and transported to a hospital in Marathan for treatment. 

Joseph Cibellis, 52, was at the helm during the accident and was not reported with any injuries. A third passenger – Steven Kropp, 60 – was also apparently uninjured.
