Welcome to the NHL Daily Picks, where CBS hockey writers Chris Peters and Adam Gretz share their predictions for select games every day.

Game of the night: It has been a solid couple of days in the picks department as I’ve hit on the winners in three out of the four games each day and every pregame star selection has found the back of the net. Let’s see if we can keep this mini-hot streak rolling into the weekend. The two best goal scorers in the modern NHL game will be on the same ice in Tampa on Saturday night when Alex Ovechkin’s Capitals take their show on the road to meet Steven Stamkos’ Lightning. Stamkos is coming off a two-goal effort in Tampa Bay’s win over Philadelphia on Thursday night, but Ovechkin is riding a little bit of a goal drought having not scored in five straight games. Slumps happen even to the best players, but you’re not going to keep a guy like that down forever. The Lightning, though, aren’t just about Stamkos. They’re one of the deepest teams in the Eastern Conference and are off to a fantastic start having won seven of their first 11 games. Pick: Capitals 4, Lightning 3 (shootout)

Brotherly love: Not only is it the first matchup of the season between Original Six teams Chicago and Toronto, it’s the first time that brothers James van Riemsdyk (Toronto) and Trevor van Riemsdyk (Chicago) will face off in an NHL game.
