CROWN POINT — A man allegedly sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl last week at a gas station near the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond.

Justin C. Lake, 28, of Chicago, was charged Friday in Lake Criminal Court with rape and sexual battery, both felonies.

The girl reported the alleged sexual assault to police April 3, court records state. She said she met Lake online and on the night of April 2 he picked her up in his vehicle in Chicago. She said Lake told her he was high on marijuana and Xanax, he had not slept in four days and he was being followed.

The defendant drove the woman around Illinois for hours, at one point hitting her on the head with a bottle and then breaking her cellphone. She said he parked his vehicle about 2 a.m. April 3 in the garage at Horseshoe Casino, 777 Casino Center Drive, and sexually assaulted her, records state.

The woman said they left the garage around 4 or 5 a.m. She said she eventually was able to escape Lake’s vehicle at 2 p.m. near 95th and Normal streets in Chicago.

The woman called her mother from an automobile shop and reported she was sexually assaulted. The mother and daughter then drove to Franciscan Health Hammond, where Hammond police were notified.

The girl underwent a sexual assault examination at the hospital. She provided police Lake’s phone number and a description of his vehicle.

A detective reviewed surveillance footage from the casino. The footage showed Lake’s vehicle arriving at the parking garage at 2 a.m. and leaving at 5 a.m. Lake allegedly spoke with a security officer at the casino while he was there, records state.
