Longtime MLB shortstop joining Tigers as infield coordinator – MLive.com

Longtime Major League infielder Jose Valentin is joining the Detroit Tigers staff as the minor-league infield coordinator.

Valentin played in the big leagues with four clubs from 1992 to 2007. He most recently served as first base coach for the San Diego Padres in 2015.

Valentin will help monitor Tigers infield prospects like Dawel Lugo, Isaac Paredes and Sergio Alcantara.

Another former MLB infielder, Mariano Duncan, is joining the staff at Class A West Michigan

The Tigers released their full list of coaching assignments on Thursday. Some of the assignments have already been announced or reported.

Changes from 2017

Scott Fletcher is now a hitting coordinator after spending 2017 as infield coordinator.

Adam Daily is now the Analytics/TrackMan Coordinator after serving as minor league video coordinator in 2017. Jim McKew will take Daily’s old role, with Kan Ikeda serving as the assistant.

Manny Pena, who served as the athletic trainer for GCL Tigers West in 2017, will now be “Assistant Medical Coordinator – International” in 2018.

Triple-A Toledo

Doug Mientkiewicz is the new manager, while pitching coach Jeff Pico, hitting coach Brian Harper, coach Basilio Cabrera, athletic trainer Chris McDonald and strength and conditioning coach Fred Murphy all return to the Mud Hens staff in 2018.

Double-A Erie

Andrew Graham was promoted to lead the Seawolves after managing at Class A (Advanced) Lakeland in 2017.
