More than $2 billion was spent on gambling in New Zealand in the last year.

Figures from the Department of Internal Affairs shows that’s up $7 million from the previous financial year.

TAB racing and sports betting, spending on lotteries products and casino gambling all increased.

Spending on gaming machines in pubs and clubs dropped.

When adjusted for inflation total gambling expenditure in 2013 declined by almost 19 percent from the peak recorded in 2004.
