DUI suspect – already on probation for DUI – found with stolen rifle, officials say – Press-Enterprise

A Perris traffic stop of a driver who authorities say was impaired led Riverside County sheriff’s deputies to a stolen AR-15 rifle with a high capacity magazine and ammunition Thursday afternoon, sheriff’s officials say.

Edgar Martinez Menchaca, of Perris, was arrested and booked into Southwest Detention Center on suspicion of driving under the influence, as well as violating the terms of his probation for a previous DUI conviction, according to a sheriff’s news release.

Around 1 p.m., Perris station deputies noticed a white Honda traveling northbound on Perris Boulevard near the 215 Freeway at a high rate of speed, officials said.

The driver, later identified as Menchaca, was erratically passing other vehicles, prompting deputies to pull him over, according to the statement. Deputies determined Menchaca was driving while under the influence of drugs.

After doing a check of his background, deputies learned Menchaca was on probation for a prior DUI and his driver’s license was suspended. He also had an arrest warrant on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance.

Deputies eventually found the stolen AR-15 rifle, magazine and ammunition in his vehicle, officials said.
