Discovery of ammunition prompts soft lockdown at Thomas Jefferson Primary … – Peoria Journal Star

PEORIA — Peoria’s Thomas Jefferson Primary School instituted a soft lockdown Friday morning after a gun case, clip and ammunition were found outside on school grounds. No gun was found, according to a press release, and the soft lockdown was ended at 12:45 p.m.

District 150 Superintendent Grenita Lathan said the lockdown was initiated as a safety precaution while police investigated to make sure there was no threat. She said all parents had been notified of the situation, as is customary whenever there is an increased police presence at the school.

“Everyone is safe. Everything is fine,” Lathan said.

A soft lockdown means that anybody entering the school can only enter the office area and cannot access the rest of the school. With the lockdown over, the school has reverted to its normal procedure. Visitors are allowed in the school after they check in at the main office.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
