'Dear Abby' Gives Advice on Weed – SFGate (blog)

Popular advice column Dear Abby established itself as an American voice of morality since its inception in 1956, providing us with socially acceptable mores and folkways to live by.

Today, that voice is surprisingly tolerant towards responsible marijuana use.

Last week, “Colorado Mom” asked Abby how to to talk to her son about marijuana despite the anti-drug lectures at school telling him that “pot is poison.”

“Marijuana isn’t poison, unless it was sprayed with a poisonous chemical before being harvested,” Abby replied.

The advice columnist Abigail Van Buren then went on to note that marijuana is now safely cultivated for adult use in legal states, making it no more dangerous than alcohol. Abby does make it clear, however, that both alcohol and marijuana should not be used by minors.
