Clearwater man says thief stole guns from his safe – KWCH

CLEARWATER, Kan. (KWCH) A Clearwater man said someone broke into his home, stealing his guns, ammo and a bow.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said the best way to keep firearms safe is to put them in a safe.

That’s exactly what David Swanson did with his guns, but someone still managed to get them.

He said he came home Friday night to find his front door kicked open.

“When they went through the bedroom, I had the key hidden up high, and they ended up finding it in the bedroom, got in the safe and looked like they tried kicking it open at first, and it didn’t work,” said Swanson.

Lieutenant Lin Dehning said Swanson did the right thing by putting his guns in a safe.

“Guns are a big theft item because they’re so easy to sell or trade for something,” said Dehning.

Swanson gave the gun serial numbers to The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, which said that can be a big help in recovering the guns.

“Have pictures of them,” said Dehning. “Have them inventoried by serial number, the type of gun, the model, as much info you can give us if those guns get stolen.”

Swanson feels like he was targeted because nothing else in the house was stolen.

“I think they got what they came for,” said Swanson.
