After hearing from several members of the public, the council voted to approve the amendment.

The city of Bloomington plans to regulate the use of electronic smoking devices or e-cigarettes in much the same way it does regular cigarettes.

City Council voted Wednesday night to amend the current city smoking ordinance to include e-cigarettes.

Bloomington’s Community and Family Resources Director, Beverly Calendar Anderson says it’s about protecting public health.

“This amendment is not about the pros and cons of vaping, Calendar Anderson says. “It is about the ability of Bloomington residents and visitors to breathe as clean air as possible when in public spaces.”

Council Member Isabella Piedmont-Smith proposed two amendments. The first allows vaping inside of shops that sell electronic smoking devices, and the second requires updated “no smoking” signs that include e-cigarette iconography. Both amendments passed.

Council Member Steve Volan asked for for more time to research and deliberate over the issue. But the postponement failed with a 4-4 tie vote.

After hearing from several members of the public as well city and county representatives the council voted to approve the amendment with seven yes votes and one abstention.
