Beer Man: Ommegang back with another tasty 'Game of Thrones' brew – Appleton Post Crescent

Ommegang has released a Game of Thrones-themed gift-pack comprised of the new Winter is Here, a double white ale, or witbier, and Fire and Blood, a red ale brewed with ancho chilies that was originally released in 2014.

Although the popular HBO fantasy series last aired in August, Ommegang usually releases two GOT beers a year. 

Winter is Here is made with pilsner and white wheat malts, plus soft red wheat flakes and hopped with Saaz hops.

As is typical with witbiers, it is spiced with white pepper, coriander and sweet orange peel. Some sea salt is also included in the mix.

As is typical with Ommegang beers, all the technical aspects are right on – good carbonation, fluffy and lasting head, and nice mouthfeel. 

For those who enjoy Belgian-style witbiers, there is much to celebrate with Winter is Here. It had all the components of a quality witbier, but more. The extra spices and malt gave it more heft and complexity, but was balanced with the extra alcohol content.

The only other “duppelwit” I’ve had was from Wisconsin’s New Glarus brewery, and Winter is Here is as good, if not better. Another interesting aspect of the beer is that despite its extra alcohol content, it still drank fairly light.

Fire and Blood, as previously mentioned, was released several years ago, and gives up plum and raisin flavors from the ancho peppers, along with rye and biscuit notes. It is not a Belgian-style red for the base beer, but more of an American red ale. It has an ABV
