Anaheim to celebrate craft breweries with maker of beer-rating app – OCRegister

Anaheim is one of seven cities that will get a visit from a co-founder of Untappd, a mobile app that lets users rate and review local beers and check out other people’s recommendations on what to drink.

Untappd’s Greg Avola will stop at Bottle Logic Brewing on Sunday, April 15, as part of a tour of cities that had the most users check in during the month of March. Anaheim came in fourth, with nearly 16,500 check-ins on the app, after New York City, Chicago and Tampa. Charlotte, Cincinnati and Portland rounded out the list.

“I think it’s indicative of Anaheim’s craft brew industry that we’re being recognized,” Mayor Tom Tait said.

Tait announced the “Brew City” initiative in 2014 to streamline the approval process for new craft breweries. There are now 15 breweries open and seven more are planned, according to the city.

“We’re very proud of that not just for the craft itself, but these craft breweries bring people together,” Tait said.

Since Untappd launched in 2010, Avola said it has grown to serve 5.5 million beer enthusiasts who have made 550 million check-ins worldwide.

Avola found it notable that Anaheim did so well in the March contest, considering it has barely more than a dozen breweries registered on the app compared with more than 100 locations in New York City.

While some East Coast denizens hear Anaheim and reflexively think Disneyland, Avola said, as the city adds more craft breweries, “I think the perception is definitely changing and we’re hearing a lot more about it.”
