Alton police searching river after report man jumped in near Argosy … – STLtoday.com

UPDATED at 11 a.m. with the discovery of the man’s body.

An Alton volunteer rescue team has recovered the body of a man near the banks of the Mississippi River, according to Alton police.

Police identified the man as Ashton A. Robinson, 26, of the 500 block of Cherry Street in Alton. Earlier, Alton police said they received a report of a man jumping into the river around 1:15 a.m. Monday near the Argosy Casino.

The Alton Volunteer Emergency Corps used sonar technology to find the body underwater near the riverbank at about 10:20 a.m., police said.

Alton Police said the Illinois Conservation Police, the Alton Fire Department and the man’s family and friends also helped with the search. The body will be taken to a local funeral home where arrangements will be determined, police said.
